Our Mission
The Wellness Science Initiative exists to help people become better thinkers. Our goal is not to tell people what to think. Our goal is to help people develop the knowledge, reasoning skills, and judgment needed to evaluate evidence for themselves. Every member contributes to that mission. Whether you are asking thoughtful questions, sharing evidence, explaining concepts, respectfully challenging ideas, or simply learning from others, you help shape the culture of this community. We believe the strongest communities are built on curiosity, humility, integrity, and mutual respect.
Our Community Principles
Everything within WSI is guided by a few simple principles. We strive to:
Be curious before being certain.
Ask better questions.
Evaluate evidence consistently.
Distinguish evidence from opinion.
Acknowledge uncertainty.
Revise our views when better evidence becomes available.
Respect people, even when disagreeing with their ideas.
Help others learn.
These principles apply equally to every participant, moderator, administrator, educator, sponsor, and guest.
Expected Behavior
We encourage members to:
Ask thoughtful questions.
Share reliable sources whenever possible.
Explain your reasoning.
Remain open to changing your mind.
Welcome respectful disagreement.
Assume good intentions.
Give others the opportunity to clarify their views.
Admit uncertainty when appropriate.
Help create a community where people feel comfortable learning.
Scientific progress depends upon thoughtful discussion. Healthy disagreement is encouraged. Personal attacks are not.
Respectful Disagreement
Disagreement is expected. Disrespect is not. Participants are encouraged to challenge ideas, assumptions, interpretations, and conclusions. However, discussions should always focus on the ideas being presented rather than the character, intelligence, motives, or worth of the individual presenting them.
Statements such as: "I interpret the evidence differently because..." or "Can you help me understand why you reached that conclusion?" strengthen discussion.
Statements intended to embarrass, insult, ridicule, or shame another participant do not. Changing your mind is viewed as a strength—not a weakness.
Evidence-Based Discussion
The Wellness Science Initiative welcomes many perspectives. However, not every claim is equally supported. When discussing scientific topics, members are encouraged to:
Explain their reasoning.
Reference scientific evidence when available.
Distinguish facts from opinions.
Distinguish personal experiences from scientific evidence.
Acknowledge uncertainty.
Recognize the limitations of available evidence.
Avoid presenting speculation as established fact.
We encourage healthy skepticism toward every claim—including our own.
Scientific reasoning means applying the same standards of evidence regardless of who makes the claim.
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is a valuable educational tool when used appropriately.
Members are welcome to use AI to:
Explore scientific concepts.
Improve their understanding.
Generate study questions.
Summarize information for personal learning.
However, AI may not be used to complete quizzes, answer competition questions, or gain an unfair advantage during official competitions unless explicitly permitted.
Competition submissions should always represent the participant's own reasoning and understanding.
Professional Conduct
To maintain a welcoming environment, members may not engage in behavior that disrupts productive discussion.
Examples include:
Personal attacks
Harassment
Threats
Hate speech
Bullying
Discrimination
Intimidation
Deliberate misinformation
Spam
Impersonation
Coordinated manipulation of discussions or voting
Repeated off-topic posting
Sharing another person's private information without permission
Respectful disagreement is welcome. Hostile behavior is not.
Language & Profanity
The Wellness Science Initiative welcomes participants from many professional, cultural, educational, and age backgrounds. Members are expected to communicate professionally. Occasional mild language is unlikely to result in moderation by itself. However, profanity directed toward another individual, abusive language, repeated vulgarity, or language intended to intimidate or demean others may result in moderator action. When in doubt, choose language that contributes to respectful, professional discussion.
Moderator Actions
Moderators exist to support learning, not to control discussion. Their responsibilities include:
Welcoming new members.
Answering questions.
Encouraging thoughtful discussion.
Enforcing community standards.
Awarding community recognition according to published criteria.
Removing spam and inappropriate content.
Investigating reports.
Protecting the integrity of competitions.
Whenever moderators manually award or remove competition points, they must document:
The reason for the action.
The applicable moderation category.
The moderator responsible.
The date and time of the action.
Reporting Concerns
Members are encouraged to report:
Harassment
Spam
Fake accounts
Cheating
Abuse
Vote manipulation
Rule violations
Technical issues affecting competition integrity
Reports help moderators maintain a healthy community.
Submitting knowingly false reports may itself violate these standards.
Appeals
If you believe a moderation decision or competition action was made in error, you may submit an appeal within 24 hours of the action.
Appeals are reviewed by a WSI administrator. Appeals should include i) A description of the issue, ii) Relevant supporting information, iii) The reason you believe the decision should be reconsidered. iv) Administrator decisions following review are final.
Consequences
Most moderation begins with education rather than punishment. When appropriate, moderators may provide guidance, issue reminders, remove content, remove competition points, restrict specific community features, suspend accounts, disqualify participants from competitions, permanently remove members from the community, the severity of moderator action depends upon the nature, frequency, and impact of the behavior. Serious violations—including harassment, cheating, impersonation, coordinated fraud, or actions that undermine the integrity of the community or competitions—may result in immediate removal.
Our Commitment
The Wellness Science Initiative is built on a simple belief. People from different backgrounds can learn together when they share common standards of evidence, integrity, curiosity, and respect. We are not building a community where everyone agrees. We are building a community where people learn to disagree well. By participating in WSI, you help create an environment where thoughtful discussion, scientific reasoning, and intellectual humility can flourish. Thank you for helping make the Wellness Science Initiative a place where better questions lead to better conversations—and better conversations lead to better decisions.
